Recognizing the Range of Colds and Coughs, Investigating the Causes

Colds and cough

The foundation of health, according to the age-old holistic system of Ayurveda, is the balance between the three doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha). Common colds and coughs are frequently the result of imbalances in these dosha; these symptoms are usually caused by an excess of pitta and kapha, which results in nasal congestion and coughing.

According to Ayurveda, a person’s body constituency is determined by how closely they align with a specific dosha or dosha combination. Vatas tend to feel chilly more often than Pittas, who sense warm emotions more frequently. Although kaphas are climatically adaptable, they are less likely to be in cold and humid weather.

Even if internal causes are important, outside issues like pollution can have a big impact. Particulate matter and gases combine to form air pollution, which causes upper respiratory problems such as runny nose, sneezing, and coughing. Small particles enter the lungs deeply, and components that dissolve in water pass through alveolar capillaries and into the bloodstream. These contaminants come from a variety of sources, including emissions from combustion, dust and natural particles like mold and pollen.

When this air pollution gets into our upper respiratory and in contact with Kapha (a watery sticky substance that is produced in some parts of the body, especially the nose) in the modern world it is called “Mucus”.

Numerous things, such as certain food habits, drinking cold water, leading a sedentary lifestyle, and spending a lot of time in cold and damp areas, might contribute to an imbalanced Kapha dosha.

It is important to avoid certain situations however when it is unavoidable it is important to detox these elements from our body on a periodic basis.

Ayurvedic remedies such as Shunti Dhaniya Tisane, Shunti Turmeric Tisane, Ashwagandha Tisane, and Tulsi Tisane can help restore balance and fight off colds and coughs by addressing particular dosha imbalances.
